Why we build Masonic Lodge websites with WordPress
A Lodge website should survive changes of Secretary, webmaster, hosting company and committee.
That is one reason we build with WordPress.
WordPress is established and widely supported
WordPress is used across a huge range of websites and has a mature ecosystem of themes, plugins, developers and documentation. A Lodge is therefore not dependent on one small Masonic website company continuing to operate the same private platform forever.
Your content remains normal WordPress content
Pages, posts and images can be edited through WordPress rather than existing only inside a proprietary visual builder. Our newer builds use Gutenberg — the WordPress block editor — for the normal editable page content.
WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress?
They use the same core WordPress idea but the hosting arrangement is different.
Most of our client sites are on WordPress.com because managed hosting removes much of the routine server administration. For some projects another WordPress host may make sense. We decide according to the site’s actual requirements.
Can we use our own theme?
On suitable WordPress.com paid plans, custom themes and plugins can be used. That allows us to create a consistent MasonicWebsite design system without forcing the Lodge into a generic preset.
Does WordPress make the site difficult to update?
It does not have to. WordPress can become complicated when a site accumulates unnecessary plugins and page builders. We prefer a restrained setup and normal Gutenberg content for the parts a Lodge is likely to edit. Our guide to WordPress plugins for Masonic Lodge websites explains that approach.
What about maintenance?
Managed hosting reduces some infrastructure work, but the website still needs ownership. Someone should be responsible for content accuracy, theme/plugin updates where applicable and reviewing the site periodically.
If the Lodge does not want that responsibility, our Masonic website management service is available.
Can WordPress support advanced Lodge features?
Yes, within the limits of the chosen hosting and plugins. Members areas, directories, forms, event booking, payments and calendar functions can all be scoped when needed.
What about Lodge email?
Professional email normally sits alongside WordPress rather than inside it. We can help configure role-based Lodge email addresses so public contact details can remain consistent when officers change.
Why not build our own site on a DIY service?
You can. The difficulty is not getting a homepage onto the internet; it is producing the copy, structure, mobile layout, search setup and long-term maintenance process. A DIY builder is excellent when somebody in the Lodge has the time and inclination to own all of that work.
Want a WordPress Lodge website without building it yourself?
That is exactly what we do. Look at our Masonic Lodge website examples, then tell us about the Lodge and we will build the complete starting site for you.
